Did You See This?

Susan Belangee

Back in 2023, the Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, published an advisory report about loneliness and lack of social connection as a critical public health issue. It highlighted how isolation and loneliness are profoundly impacting individual and community well-being. The report emphasizes that social connection is essential for mental and physical health, and loneliness can lead to significant health risks.

Unfortunately, the report fails to mention Alfred Adler, who initially cautioned in the early 1900s about the negative impacts of lacking a sense of belonging and meaningful contribution on both individuals and society. Many of his published articles, pamphlets, and books described how humans without a felt sense of belonging developed physical ailments and exhibited psychological disorders, and also how these issues lessened or vanished once belonging was restored.

Murthy's report mirrors Adler's conclusions, "Given the profound consequences of loneliness and isolation, we have an opportunity, and an obligation, to make the same investments in addressing social connection that we have made in addressing tobacco

use, obesity, and the addiction crisis. This Surgeon General’s Advisory shows us how to build more connected lives and a more connected society. If we fail to do so, we will pay an ever-increasing price in the form of our individual and collective health and well-being. And we will continue to splinter and divide until we can no longer stand as a community or a country" (p. 4).

Key Findings in the Report

  • Prevalence of Loneliness: The report notes that loneliness has reached epidemic levels, affecting millions of Americans across various demographics.

  • Health Implications: Loneliness is linked to increased risks of mental health disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and other health issues, comparable to the risks associated with smoking and obesity.

  • Impact on Communities: Social disconnection not only affects individuals but also weakens community ties, leading to broader societal issues.

Recommendations

  • Policy Initiatives: The report calls for policies that promote social connection, including community-building initiatives and support for mental health services.

  • Public Awareness Campaigns: It encourages campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of social connections and to reduce the stigma associated with loneliness.

  • Individual Action: Individuals are urged to engage in activities that foster connections, such as volunteering, joining clubs, or reaching out to friends and family.

Conclusion

The advisory report underscores the urgent need to prioritize social connection as a critical component of health and well-being. By addressing loneliness and fostering stronger social ties, individuals and communities can improve overall health outcomes and enhance quality of life.

The need for belonging is a fundamental human requirement, not limited to Americans or Western cultures. It is essential to address this need at the individual, societal, and global levels. Alfred Adler recognized this over a century ago, long before this Advisory Report was created, yet people seem to disregard the science and wisdom. My deepest hope is that we understand this and take action before it becomes too late.
